The Ahwaz Human Rights Center \u2013 UK has received a video showing the self-immolation attempt of an unemployed young Arab man from the village of Owdah in the Gheyzaniyeh region. This incident, which occurred on Monday, 13 Mordad 1404 (4 August 2025), was a strong reaction to discrimination in employment, poverty, and lack of access to basic civil rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This young man, who had tried for years to find a job in oil companies but faced structural obstacles, attempted this desperate act to draw public and official attention to chronic deprivation and ethnic discrimination against indigenous Arab inhabitants in Ahwaz. Fortunately, with the intervention of those present, the suicide attempt failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to reports from local sources and human rights activists, prior to this act he had expressed his dissatisfaction with the systematic exclusion of local workers and their replacement with non-local workers in the region\u2019s oil and gas industries\u2014a process that may constitute structural discrimination against the Arab nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gheyzaniyeh region, with over 750 active oil wells and companies such as Marun Oil, Karun Oil, and Marun Petrochemical, is considered one of the richest areas of Ahwaz in terms of natural resources. However, more than 80 of its villages lack access to basic services such as safe drinking water, secure roads, health centers, and job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center \u2013 UK has repeatedly expressed its concern over structural poverty, ethnic discrimination, and underdeveloped policies in Ahwaz. The continuation of this situation may endanger not only human dignity but also social security and regional stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center \u2013 UK calls on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, Human Rights Watch, and other international bodies to pay special attention to the critical human rights situation in Ahwaz. This act is not merely an individual reaction, but a reflection of accumulated crises that have pressured the Arab community in Ahwaz for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
