Worker’s Suicide in Bushehr: Another Reflection of Structural Poverty and Injustice in the Industrial Regions of the South
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK expresses its deep concern over the expansion of structural poverty, exploitation of labor, and the lack of accountability from responsible institutions regarding the living conditions of workers in the southern industrial regions.
On Tuesday, 13 Mordad 1404 (4 August 2025), one of the workers at the Sadra Industrial Company, located on the industrial island of Bushehr, tragically committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of the work platform. According to his colleagues, the worker had gone months without receiving wages, facing only repeated promises from workshop officials, and ultimately, under the pressure of poverty and despair, lost his life.
This act occurred while, according to local sources, he had been facing severe economic hardship and complete abandonment, and had repeatedly complained about his economic situation prior to this incident. So far, the identity of this individual has not been officially released.
This incident reflects the unjust situation that has been imposed for years on the oil-rich and industrial southern regions—areas that, despite producing massive wealth, still force their local residents and workers to struggle with discrimination, poverty, job insecurity, and lack of public services.
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK, while expressing sympathy with the family of this worker, states that this event, alongside dozens of similar cases, is a direct result of underdeveloped policies, centralization, and the structural neglect of governing institutions in these lands—policies that have severely undermined human dignity and social justice.
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK documents this incident as part of the broader picture of the human rights crisis in the occupied lands of the Arab Nation of Ahwaz, and calls on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, Human Rights Watch, and other international bodies to independently investigate the living and legal conditions of workers and indigenous residents in the oil-rich southern regions and to take the necessary steps to stop this dangerous trend.
