UN Human Rights Council Resolution: Mandate Extended for Special Rapporteur and Fact-Finding Mission on Iran

At the conclusion of its 58th annual session in Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution extending the mandates of the Special Rapporteur and the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for another year. The resolution passed with 23 votes in favor, 8 against, and 15 abstentions.

In the resolution, the Council condemned the “systematic violations of human rights in Iran” and called on the Islamic Republic authorities to end the “structural impunity” granted to those responsible for acts of repression. It urged full cooperation with both the Special Rapporteur and the UN Fact-Finding Mission to investigate these human rights abuses. The Human Rights Council emphasized that this structural impunity has fueled a cycle of violence and deprived victims of justice.

During the session, representatives from various countries — including Iceland, Spain, Belgium, Brazil, and Switzerland — voiced concern over the rising number of executions, suppression of free speech, violations of women’s and girls’ rights, and the targeting of religious and ethnic minorities in Iran. They called for greater cooperation from the Islamic Republic with international human rights mechanisms.
