Execution of Ammar Hasani and the Human Rights Situation in Ahwaz

Statement of the Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK on the Execution of Ammar Hasani and the Human Rights Situation in Ahwaz
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK, while emphasizing the necessity of justice and fair trial, closely monitors the execution of Ammar Hasani, a 27-year-old Arab youth from Ahwaz, which was carried out on Sunday, September 5, 2025, at Sepidar Prison in Ahwaz. This prisoner was arrested three years ago on charges of intentional murder and sentenced to Qisas (retribution), a sentence that was executed without public notification and in the absence of judicial transparency. The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK strongly condemns the execution of this sentence without full adherence to the principles of fair trial and judicial transparency.
These executions occur while the Arab community of Ahwaz has become severely vulnerable due to structural discrimination, widespread poverty, and lack of fair access to justice. Poverty and deprivation have deprived many Arab defendants of the right to a fair defense, and the unjust judicial system exacerbates this situation. These conditions put defendants at serious risk and have led to tragedies such as the case of Ammar Hasani. The regime, instead of addressing the root causes of social, economic, and educational problems, resorts solely to repression and punishment, and is responsible for perpetuating this cycle of violence.
Ahwaz, despite its natural wealth and vast resources, remains one of the most deprived regions under the rule of the Iranian regime. The Arab community of Ahwaz has faced systemic discrimination for years in education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. These discriminatory policies have marginalized the younger generation, exposing them to poverty, addiction, and dangerous paths that ultimately lead to judicial and security repression, imprisonment, and ultimately execution, as in the case of Ammar Hasani. This dire situation requires an urgent and serious response.
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK, warning about these conditions, calls for the immediate halt of executions, especially in cases where unfair judicial processes exist. It also demands independent investigations into judicial procedures that violate justice, special attention from international bodies to the human rights situation in Ahwaz, an end to discrimination in all areas, and guarantees for the rights to education, employment, and dignified living for all members of the Arab community in Ahwaz.
