Critical Condition of Hussein Sahagi, Ahwazi Arab Political Prisoner in Sheiban Prison; Deliberate Deprivation of Specialized Treatment
According to reports received by the Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK, Hussein Sahagi, an Ahwazi Arab political prisoner, is in a deeply concerning state of mental health following prolonged physical and psychological torture, as well as intense pressure while in the custody of security agencies.
Hussein Sahagi, son of Ibrahim, has been held for over a year in Block 5 of Sheiban Prison, alongside fellow Ahwazi Arab political prisoner Jassim Loimi. He was initially arrested by the cyber police (FATA), and during his detention—particularly at a facility under the control of the Ministry of Intelligence in Ahwaz—he was subjected to severe physical abuse and psychological mistreatment. These abuses have caused significant damage to his mental health.
As his condition deteriorated, Sahagi was briefly transferred to a psychiatric facility. However, before completing his treatment and without any clear improvement in his condition, he was returned to prison. According to sources inside the facility, Sahagi now exhibits acute psychiatric symptoms and is nearing a full psychological breakdown.
Despite this, authorities have denied him access to proper medical care or transfer to an independent psychiatric institution. Instead, prison officials have reportedly responded to his condition with humiliation and mockery. Khosrow Tarfi, the warden of Sheiban Prison, reportedly told Sahagi:
“If this were the 1980s, I would’ve let you sing and speak your mind.”
This statement, along with the ongoing denial of treatment, highlights the deep cruelty and institutional disregard for the life and health of Ahwazi Arab political prisoners.
Although Sahagi spent one week under observation at the psychiatric center overseen by prison doctor Fouad Mazra’e, the lack of resources, absence of independent medical oversight, and the oppressive conditions within the prison worsened his mental state rather than improving it.
The Ahwaz Human Rights Center – UK warns that the continued mistreatment of Hussein Sahagi represents a flagrant violation of fundamental human rights and human dignity. It further underscores the structural indifference of Iranian state institutions toward the most basic humanitarian standards in their treatment of Ahwazi Arab political prisoners.
