Justice Denied: The Case of Habib Chaab and the Plight of Ahwazi Arabs in Iran

Habib Fajr Allah Chaab (Asyoud) was an Ahwazi-Swedish Arab activist, founder, and leader of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz, who was abducted and smuggled to Iran in Turkey in 2020 and subsequently handed over to the Iranian authorities. He was then charged with fake terrorism-related offenses under extreme torture and sentenced to death by hanging on the 6th of May in a closed-door trial that did not meet international standards for due process.

It is important to note that Habib Faraj Allah’s case is not an isolated one, as there have been reports of other Ahwazi Arab activists and dissidents being subjected to torture and other forms of mistreatment while in detention.

The Ahwazi nation in Iran has long been marginalized and discriminated against by the Iranian regime. Ahwazi Arabs, live in different provinces in south and southwestern Iran, which has been the site of ongoing protests and unrest.

The Iranian regime has been accused of using tactics such as forced displacement, land confiscation, and discrimination in employment and education to suppress the Ahwazi nation. There have also been reports of torture, arbitrary detention, and extrajudicial killings of Ahwazi Arabs by Iranian security forces.

The execution of Habib Fajr Allah is just one example of the Iranian regime’s harsh treatment of Ahwazi Arab activists and dissidents. His case highlights the lack of respect for human rights and the rule of law in Iran and the urgent need for international attention and action to address the situation.

It is important to continue raising awareness about the plight of the Ahwazi nation in Iran and to advocate for their rights and freedoms, as well as by supporting organizations that work to promote human rights and democracy for all nations especially Ahwazis in Iran.

The Iranian regime must take immediate steps to investigate these reports and hold accountable those responsible for any acts of torture or mistreatment and also these executions, In addition, it must ensure that all detainees have access to legal counsel and a fair trial, in accordance with international human rights standards.

The international community has an important role to play in holding the Iranian regime accountable for its actions and advocating for the protection of human rights in Iran. It can do so by calling for independent investigations into allegations of torture and other abuses, and by supporting civil society organizations and human rights defenders in their efforts to promote accountability, transparency, and freedom in Ahwaz.
