Ahwazi Centre for Human Rights deeply concern about the situation of Corona virus in Al-Ahwaz

According to a trusted Ahwazi citizen (for security reasons, information about the identity of these professionals will not be disclosed), there is a hospital in each capital city in quarantine isolating confirmed patients with Corona virus. The identity of these patients or the true number of confirmed cases are still unknown.
Whilst the Iranian authorities are still insisting on portraying the opposite image of what is actually happening on the grounds, in Qom city alone there has been 59 confirmed deaths due to Corona virus so far with the number increasing daily. This is while the assistant to minister of health’s test came back positive with Corona virus according to Manoto TV only yesterday.

Another trusted source, outside Ahwaz, confirmed there has been a number of people disappearing for no particular reason followed by a phone call to advise their families that they are in quarantine due to Corona virus infection. This appalling plan commenced following the lock down in all main hospitals in Shiraz declaring a quarantine status yesterday and now they are transferring patients to other hospitals due to reaching capacity.

People, in an attempt to stay away from public places and to protect their families, (those who can afford to) have purchased food and supplies for months in advance and have completely isolated themselves from the outside world taking shelters in their homes.

Until this moment, the Iranian authorities have taken no measures in the prevention and controlling of the wide-spreading virus and are still advising that all is good and business as usual. This denial is happening while there is a complete lack of basic preventative supplies such as gloves, masks and Dettol. People had to revert to the use of traditional medicines such as herbs and plant’s oils/concentrates as an alternative method of prevention. Furthermore to this, the waste from the quarantined hospitals is being disposed directly into Karoon river. People also have complained that hospitals are not equipped to handle such an epidemic disease. Low hygiene, lack of machinery, extremely poor diet, lack of staff and lack of remorse are only a few of the issues people are facing when diagnosed with the virus. This has led to infected people being afraid of approaching the current health system when experiencing early symptoms and this naturally has became a contributing factor to the wide spread.

All of these events followed the horrendous election failure where only 14% of the population in Iran partook in the election. Despite the Iranian dictatorship trying very hard to keep everything under control(no matter the price), it seems not possible anymore. People have grown realisation that the current system is not for the people but against them and this negligence regarding the widespread of Corona virus is just another example.

The Iranian authorities not only have failed to protect the people from the wide-spreading virous and providing preventative supplies but has started a series of arrests to whomever is attempting to communicate these informations to the international society. 24 people have been arrested so far.

We, the Ahwazi Centre for Human Rights (ACHR), are collectively and deeply concerned about how poorly this grave health crisis is being handled by the Iranian authorities and call upon all human rights organisations across the globe to not stop from pressuring Iran in performing their duties towards the people in its borders and give back to them their most basic right and that is genuine healthcare service according to the international standards clarity regarding the true status of the infected and suspected individuals clarity regarding their prevention plan increased quality in healthcare facilities and service complete and full media access regarding the epidemic releasing the detainees ending the threats and fear centred policy allowing people to sound their concerns.
