Mass arrests against Ahwazi activists in fear of deteriorating situation during Iranian new year

According to Ahwazi activists within Al-Ahwaz quoted to Ahwazi Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) that the Iranian security service has launch mass campaign of raids and arrests against Ahwazi activists in recent days.

Mr. Hassan Sari (Sobhipour), film and imaging director, and Mr. Hossein Eshghian (Saki) Makeup artist both from Ahwazi “Nasr” Cultural Institute were arrested by the Iranian intelligence service on Wednesday the 20thof March 2019. 

Mr. Sari  living in “Althawra (Alawi)” district and Mr. Saki living in “Alwourwd (Golestan)” district of Ahwaz capital were arrested by the Iranian intelligence service without a judicial warrant.

Mr. Sari  has recently created a clip about the Arabic identity in Ahwaz, which was widely welcomed by the Ahwazis for its creativity. In this clip that named as “The Unity Song”, there are Ahwazi young girls and boys wearing Arabic dresses have been used in making the clip, and poetry that used in the clip, has been used by the people of “Rofaye’a” village in the face of the recent flood in southern and western cities of Al-Ahwaz.

Iranian security forces did not give any explanation when arresting the institute members, but the recent clip was the main reason behind the arrest of this person.

The ACHR has realized from its own sources that the Iranian media authority has asked the director to use of the Iranian flag in all his clips where Mr. Sari has refused stating that we should not mixing cultural activities with political agenda.

In similar context the Iranian intelligence service has arrested number of Ahwazi young on Sunday the 17thof March 2019.

The ACHR has identified following names:

  1. Habib Sawari
  2. Kazem Abyat 
  3. Habib Sarkhi
  4. Sayed Ali Mousavi
  5. Mohammad Amin
  6. Mohsen Haidari

The ACHR realized that the Iranian intelligence service aimed from the arrests to cool down the tensions in Ahwaz region and declared to the arrestees that they will be released after new year days terminates (usually two weeks).

Ahwazi Centre for Human Rights strongly condemns the Iranian arbitrary arrests against Ahwazi youth and calls for the immediate release of All Ahwazi detainees unconditionally and the centre calls upon the international human rights organizations and defenders to denounce the Iranian  barbaric crackdown against Ahwazi activists and put pressure on Iranian regime to stops its criminal policies in all over Al-Ahwaz.

Khuzestan (part of Al-Ahwaz) Comprehensive security plan, Al Ghadeer comprehensive project, Sustainable Development Project all are the names launched by the Iranian authorities on a single project, according to documents leaked from Iranian intelligence services and posted on social networks by Ahwazi Arab activists, which caused a noticeable disturbance to the Iranian intelligence due to unveiling the plans included in the 45-page document.

According to a document, that is prepared to thwart the Arab movement in the Al-Ahwaz in various ways, clearly shows the existence of discrimination and marginalization and national oppression against the Arabs in Khuzestan (part of Al-Ahwaz) that leads to nationwide demonstration, Community public discontent from central government, Spiralling unemployment due to importation workers from other provinces and nationalities, The confiscation of land and seeking to change the demography of the region at the expense of the Arabs, which sparked outrage and dismay and lack of confidence in the state over time, drying rivers and marshes and the document proposes a series of measures and security plans and projects to prevent any outbreak of the protests, as happened in the region in 2005 and known as “April Intifada”.
