12 Ahwazis Killed in Road Accident

By Hossein Bouazar

Around the world, road traffic injuries cause millions of deaths and injuries each year. The injuries from road traffic can lead to lifelong disability including brain and spinal cord injury. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death of millions of humans yearly.

Road safety is something important that must be always followed to ensure the safety of the operators of a vehicle, passengers, and pedestrians but if a government doesn’t implement or ensure roads are safe to drive on, that is a different story.

When we analyse how effectively Iran has implemented road safety measures and whether the regime has a national strategy with targets to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries, we get to this conclusion that Iranian regime has done nothing to save Ahwazi lives.

On 25th of December, 12 Ahwazis died in a road accident in which could’ve been prevented if Iranian regime done their job by having national strategy with targets to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries. In Ahwaz there are many roads are unmarked, broken traffic lights and not having proper road traffic rules.

Ahwazis in thousands came out to protest Iranian negligence to death of thousands Ahwazi in just road accidents yearly. The Ahwazis chanted “All of our suffering is because of Iranian regime”.

Iranian regime after occupying Al-Ahwaz, they initiated programs and policies of Persianization by enforcing Persian or Farsi as the official language and banning the teaching of Arabic in the schools in the region.

Despite the Natural wealth in Ahwaz region over 90% of oil and gas wealth claimed by Iran located in the region, while poverty spreads among Ahwazi people. We are victims of institutionalised wider spirit destitution and deprivation such as for example;

  • HealthCare
  • Decent Education.
  • Lake of equal employment opportunity.
  • Clean water
  • Clean air

Ahwazi Arabs in Iran often face state discrimination in areas including politics and culture. Iran is the second country after china in terms of execution, Ahwazi Arabs make the most of their lists. Iranian regime even executed pregnant woman. There are thousands of Ahwazi Arab has been executed and imprisoned by the Iranian racist regime to keep Ahwazi Arabs under control.

Rahim Hamid (Ahwazi journalist and human rights advocate) reported in his article “According to the media of the Iranian occupying state, MEHR News Agency, over 300,000 non-Arab migrant workers currently live and work across the al-Ahwaz region, where they live in specially constructed, ethnically homogeneous settlements. Arabs are not allowed in these settlements, which grant their residents all the rights and facilities denied to the Ahwazi people”. Since 1925 Ahwazis always been considered as second citizen.

With the disaster economy in Iran, and Ahwazis been considered second citizen without job, it is almost impossible for Ahwazi families to afford a new vehicle, so they have to drive an old and unsafe vehicle.

Iranian regime must have a proper national strategy with targets to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries.

Iranian regime must setup a proper road traffic rules.

Iranian regime must mark all roads.

Iranian regime must fix all traffic lights.

Iranian regime must reduce vehicle prices, so it is affordable for people to buy safer vehicle.

We, the Ahwazi Centre for Human Rights (ACHR), concerns, while Ahwazi Arabs faced continued oppression and discrimination, the most significant human rights issues included a high number of executions for false confession and false crimes without fair trials of individuals. Torture; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary detention and imprisonment; of hundreds of political prisoners, are just few examples of how the Iranian regime violates the human rights, but we also should add that the regime’s handling of the Covid situation proves that the regime doesn’t care about Ahwazi lives and that raises a great concern and get international attention.

We are calling upon Mr. Javaid Rehman the United Nations special rapporteur for the situation of human rights in Iran and Mrs Agnes Callamard the UN special rapporteur on extra Judicial execution to intervene and stop the Iranian criminal regime from executing innocent prisoners that were arrested without any legal warrant.
