Eight Arab Cultural Activists Have Been Sentenced to Disciplinary Imprisonment, Five Years of Suspended Sentence, and a Two-Year Travel Ban

Eight Arab cultural activists have been sentenced to disciplinary imprisonment, five years of suspended sentence, and a two-year travel ban.

According to Ahwazi human rights activists’ reports from Ahwaz, the members of the “Hurak al-Hawiyah” (Identity Movement) were arrested in the year 1397 (2018-2019) due to their civil and cultural activities. On Saturday, 24th of Tir, 1402 (July 15, 2023), they were sentenced to disciplinary imprisonment and banned from leaving Iran after appearing in the second branch of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court.

The individuals mentioned are Hussein Farajallah Chabi, a writer and historian from Shavibeh Shushtar, Nasser Shayea Mazraeh, a writer and cultural activist from Abu Hamizah region in Khafajiya, Tofiq Fallahiye, a writer and cultural activist from Khafajiya (Sosangard), Faiz Zahruni, a cultural activist in Mandaeism history and religion, Hussein Estedad (Saeedawi), an Arab singer from Khafajiya, Saeed Fakhernasab, one of the Arab cultural activists, a retired teacher and former head of the Education Department in Falahiye (Shadegan) residing in Ahwaz, Hadi Jalali, a cultural activist residing in Khafajiya, and Mosi Khalidi, a cultural activist and teacher in the schools of Khalafiye (Ramshir). All of them received a sentence of “one year of disciplinary imprisonment, five years of suspended sentence, and a two-year travel ban.”

This verdict was communicated to them by Ardeshir Taheri, the head of the second branch of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court.

The mentioned individuals were detained during the months of Farvardin and Ordibehesht in the year 1397 (March and April 2018) during the “Gheiam Karamat” uprising, and after months of detention and torture, they were released on bail from Ahwaz Central Prison (Sheiban Prison).
