JFI calls on Six United Nations Special Rapporteurs to Help Save Ahwazi Arab Prisoners and their Families

Following an urgent appeal issued on December 4, 2013 concerning the arbitrary arrest, torture and real risk of execution of Mr. Ali Chebeishat and Mr. Sayed Khaled Mousavi, JFI has written to six United

Nations officials seeking their assistance.

On 9 September 2013, Ali Chebeishat and Sayed Khaled Mousavi were sentenced to execution and Salman Chayani to twenty-five years of imprisonment in exile in Yazd at the order of Justice Sayed Mohammed Baqir Mousavi of the Fourth Branch of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court. On May 1, 2014, the families were informed of the respective convictions and death sentences of Ali Chebeishat and Sayed Khaled Mousavi were upheld by the Supreme Court of Iran.

In its call on UN officials, JFI provides reliable information pointing to their incommunicado detention and extraction of confession under torture, aired by Press TV on 26 June 2013. It also points out that the accused were denied the right to legal representation and their families, access to information. In fact, following attempts to meet with the European Parliament delegations during their stay at a Tehran hotel in December 2013, the family of Ali Chebeishat was stopped, harassed and driven away by plain cloth individuals. The Ministry of Intelligence and National Security in Shush then summoned and detained two members of the Chebeishat family for three days. Rostam and Hassan Chebeishat’s cases are pending at this date.

At the time of our initial Urgent Appeal, Mr. Chebeishat and Mr. Mousavi were held in Fajr Prison in Dezful in the north of Ahwaz Province and their sentence had been appealed to the Supreme Court of Iran. JFI was concerned by the detainees’ poor health following inadequate treatment for the injuries sustained as a result of torture and their risk of being subjected to further torture and ill treatment.

On March 18, 2014, Ali Chebeishat and Sayed Khaled Mousavi were reportedly transferred from Fajr Prison to an undisclosed location. One weak earlier Mr. Chebeishat’s 24-year-old son, Salaheddin Chebeishat, was summoned by security services, arrested and later transferred to Sepidar Prison in Ahwaz. Recently, Sallaheddin Chebishat alongside Habib Silahouh, Habib Chayan, Hosein Chebishat and Karim Chayan who are all family members of the imprisoned Arab Ahwazi activists were sentenced to six months imprisonement by Revolutionary Court.

Given the fact that the Islamic Republic follows a similar pattern in cases involving execution, the victims’ families and human rights activists are gravely concerned about the risk of execution. It is in this light that JFI has called on UN officials to save the lives of the Arab cultural activists.

JFI’s call was addressed to six Special Rapporteurs on the Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran; torture; Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions; cultural rights; Minority Issues and Independence of Judges and Lawyers.
